The Rockefeller Center 

This impressive building is located in New York, which is one of the most popular cities in the world. The large complex consists of 19 commercial buildings. The land was initially owned by Columbia University, which leased it to John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1928. 

He was the main person behind the construction (hence the name), and the construction started in 1931. It was completed by 1939 and described as one of the greatest projects of the Great Depression era. It was also declared a New York City landmark in 1985, and a National Historic Landmark in 1987. 

The Rockefeller Center is now famous for its Art Deco buildings, its ice-skating rink, and the annual ceremony and lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. 

The goal of the Rockefeller family was to create a “city within a city”, and they managed to achieve that big time. The complex is spread over 89,000 square meters (22 acres) and the buildings are very impressive. The centrepiece is the building at number 30, which is 266 meters tall (70 floors).

Over the years it had various names, such as the RCA Building, the GE Building, 30 Rock or the Comcast Building. 

The ice skating rink is very popular and you have most likely seen it in multiple Hollywood movies. It is opened from mid-October to mid-March and it gathers half a million visitors each year, whether to skate or just to admire. The area also includes lots of murals, sculptures and mosaics, so it’s definitely a must-see 

In the 2010s, Rockefeller Centre introduced the first-ever solar-powered Christmas tree using energy-efficient LED lights. With the return of The Tonight Show and The Tony awards, Rockefeller center looks to have a bright future ahead.

Cet impressionnant bâtiment est situé à New York, l'une des villes les plus populaires au monde. Le grand complexe se compose de 19 bâtiments commerciaux. Le terrain appartenait initialement à l'Université de Columbia, dont John D. Rockefeller Jr. aurait loué à partir de 1928. Il était le principal responsable de la construction (d'où le nom).

Ils ont commencé à construire en 1931 et ils ont ouvert au public en 1939. Ce bâtiment a été décrit comme l'un des plus grands projets de l'époque de la Grande Dépression. Il a également été déclaré monument de New York en 1985 et monument historique national en 1987.
