Because Holland is the biggest producer of tulips in the world, few know that it was originally cultivated in the Ottoman Empire (today’s TURKEY) and imported into Holland in the 16th century. In 1592, Carolus Clusius wrote a first major book on Tulips. In the Dutch Golden Age, the flower became had many choices of colors and curvaceousness. By the mid 17th century, the popularity of the tulip created an economic bubble which was known as “Tulip Mania”. They became so expensive they were used as money until the market crashed.
If you feel like wandering in gardens of tulips, be sure to visit Keukenhof, in Holland. Keukenhof is the largest flower garden in the world.
