This famous canal is part of the three main canals in Amsterdam. It is named after Emperor Maximilian of Austria. It is the widest canal with 31 meters wide, within the city core. The other two are Herengracht and Prinsengracht. The Dutch started to dig these canals in 1612. Initially, they planned on using it as a wide boulevard without water, but finally, the inhabitants decided on having the canal in order to reach their homes by boat.
