The Tower Bridge located in London is one of the most popular bridges in the world, and it is one of the symbols of the city. It was built between 1886 and 1894, and it’s both a bascule and a suspension bridge. This means that it can move upwards and create room for passing boats. 

It crosses the River Thames. It is owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. 

In 1876 there was a competition for the design of the bridge, and even though there were 50 entries, none of them actually won. Another 6 years had passed until the winning design was made by architect Sir Horace Jones and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry. 

The 2 sections are called bascules and they can raise up to an angle of 83 degrees, creating an interesting sight for tourists and locals. Both are very heavy and weigh 1.100 tons each, and underneath them, you can find a huge chamber. 

This chamber can be sometimes visited through a special tour, and there are even concerts held here occasionally, as the acoustics are amazing! The bridge was initially powered by steam engines running with coal, but it then switched to oil and electricity. 

The two levels above were used for pedestrians to pass when the tower was raised, but they were eventually closed as they became a “red light district” of the city. But luckily, they are now still available for tourists, as part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition.

The mix-up: London or Tower Bridge? 

London Bridge opened to traffic in 1973, being only 48 years old in 2021. It replaced the 19th-century version with concrete and steel. They needed to replace the century stone arched bridge because of its 600 years of age. 

On the other hand, the rest of the Tower Bridge has never fallen down. It still stands to this day even if it was built in 1894.

London Bridge, Lake Havasu City, Arizona, USA

• When the London Bridge in England had to be redone, the city of London sold the bridge to Robert P. McCulloch, in 1968. For use of a new construction of a new bridge, McCulloch had granite blocks from the original bridge cut and transported to Lake Havasu City, in Arizona. He had established a planned community in 1964 on the shore of Lake Havasu. Now named The Arizona bridge, it is made of reinforced concrete structure clad as it was with the original masonry of the 1830s version in London.
• Each stone of the London Bridge has a number on it because this helped with the reassembly. You can look up close and still see the numbers. The reassembly took place on the shores of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. They had to deliver by boat to the Port of Long Beach, California from London. Then transport the stones overland to Lake Havasu Cityé. 
• The London Bridge is the residence of hundreds of bats that you can find in the hollow interior and hundreds of swallows nesting on the underside of the bridge.
  

• Lake Havasu City was permanently put on the map in the seventies because of the London Bridge rassemblement.

Le Tower Bridge ou Le London Bridge est situé à Londres. Il est l'un des ponts les plus populaires au monde, et c'est l'un des symboles de la ville. Il a été construit entre 1886 et 1894, et c'est à la fois un pont basculant et un pont suspendu. Cela signifie qu'il peut se déplacer vers le haut et créer de la place pour les bateaux de passage.

Il traverse la rivière Tamise. Cette rivière est a June longueur de 346 kilomètres. Le pont appartient et est entretenu par une fiducie caritative nommé Bridge House Estates. Celle-ci est supervisée par la City of London Corporation.

Les 2 sections sont appelées bascules et peuvent s'élever jusqu'à un angle de 83 degrés, créant un spectacle intéressant pour les touristes et les habitants. Les deux sont très lourds et pèsent chacun 1,100 tonnes. 

Il y a une immense chambre qui se trouve sous les 2 tours et elle peut parfois être visitée par le biais d'une tournée spéciale. Parfois il y a aussi des concerts qui y sont organisés, puisque l'acoustique est incroyable !

Le pont était initialement alimenté par des moteurs à vapeur fonctionnant au charbon, mais éventuellement il est passé au pétrole et à l'électricité.

Les deux niveaux au-dessus étaient utilisés pour le passage des piétons lorsque la tour a été surélevée, mais ils ont finalement été fermés car ils sont devenus un «quartier rouge» de la ville. Heureusement, ils sont maintenant toujours disponibles pour les touristes, dans le cadre de l'exposition Tower Bridge.

London Bridge ou Tower Bridge ?

Le pont de Londres (London Bridge) a été ouvert à la circulation en 1973, n'ayant que 48 ans en 2021. Il a remplacé la version du XIXe siècle, nommé Tower Bridge, par du béton et de l'acier. Ils devaient remplacer le pont voûté en pierre du siècle, en raison de ses 600 ans.

En revanche, le reste du Tower Bridge n'est jamais tombé. Il existe encore à ce jour, debout, même s'il a été construit en 1894.

Un autre fait intéressant est que Le London Bridge a récemment remplacé les lumières, par des lumières LED. Cela lui donne un look vintage.

Pont de Londres, Lake Havasu City, Arizona, États-Unis

Lorsque le pont de Londres en Angleterre a dû être refait, la ville a vendu les matériaux du pont, tels que les blocs de pierres, à Robert P. McCulloch, en 1968. Celui-ci avait besoin de matériaux pour la construction d'un nouveau pont dans la ville de Lake Havasu dans l'Arizona aux États-Unis.

McCulloch a fait couper des blocs de pierres du pont d'origine et les a transporté par bateau jusqu'au port de Long Beach en Californie et finalement transportés par voie terrestre à la ville de Lake Havasu, dans l'Arizona.

Il y avait établi une communauté en 1964 sur la rive du lac Havasu. Aujourd'hui nommé The Arizona bridge, le pont est constitué d'une structure en béton armé revêtue de la maçonnerie d'origine des années 1830 à Londres.

Chaque pierre du 'Pont de Londres' porte un numéro. Ces numéros ont aidé à reconstruire le pont en Arizona. Vous pouvez regarder de près les pierres de ce pont et y apercevoir les chiffres. Vous avez donc l'explication de ces mystérieux chiffres. 

La ville de Lake Havasu a définitivement été mis sur la carte en raison du réaménagement du Pont de Londre (London Bridge).
