Porta Sempione

This delightful coloring page features the Porta Sempione, a city gate located in Milan, Italy. This neoclassical triumphal arch, designed by Luigi Cagnola, is not just an entryway but a symbol of Milan's rich history and culture. Its position at the end of Corso Sempione leads directly to the Sforza Castle, creating a link between the city's past and present. The arch's simplicity and grandeur exemplify the neoclassical style that celebrates the aesthetic of ancient Roman architecture.

Did you know?

An interesting tidbit about the Porta Sempione is that its construction was not completed by its original architect. Cagnola passed away in 1833, and the gate was completed under the supervision of Francesco Londonio and Carlo Giuseppe Londonio. It was inaugurated in 1838 by Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria. Notably, Napoleon had originally intended for a grand arch dedicated to his victories to stand here, but the Arc de Triomphe in Paris eventually took that honor. The Porta Sempione is one of the city gates of Milan, a beautiful city in Italy. The name refers to the gate but also to the surrounding area. It is also marked by a splendid arch called Arco Della Pace (The Arch of Peace).

There was already a gate in the same place for centuries, as part of the Roman walls of Milan, and it was called Porta Giovia. But it got destroyed over the years, and a new one was built in 1807. It was constructed during the rule of Napoleon, and it was inspired by the popular Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The Porta Sempione is actually located at the start of the Corso Sempione, a road that connects Milan to Paris through the Alps.

After the city was conquered by the Austrian Empire, the construction was stopped for a while and was resumed in 1826. It was only completed in 1838, and it included bas-reliefs, statues and Corinthian columns. It is made of multiple materials, including bronze, stucco and marble.

It has a height of 25 meters (82 feet) and includes beautiful bronze statues at the top, including one of a Goddess led by four horses. Below the statues, there are four personified representations of rivers found in the nearby area. These are the Ticino, the Po, the Adile and the Tagliamento.

Porta Sempione, Milan, Italy
